Taos Canyon
The closest mountain property to Taos lies in Taos Canyon. Upon
entering the mouth of the canyon, you immediately find forested slopes
with tall trees on the shady side, pinon and juniper on the sunny slope,
and cottonwoods at the canyon bottom. As you climb higher, the
pinon and juniper give way to ponderosa pine with some gamble oak, then
eventually aspen and spruce trees with grassy meadows.
This zone contains all of the private land within the Taos Canyon
area from the entrance of Taos Canyon just 3 miles from the Taos Plaza,
to the summit of Palo Flechado Pass at the headwaters of the Rio
Fernando de Taos - approximately another 15 miles up canyon. Those
immediately on the highway and off of spur roads joining the highway are
in the Taos Canyon zone, while those in and near the golf course
community of Valle Escondido are in the Valle Escondido zone.
National Forest or Taos Pueblo land provide all of the boundaries
for this zone.

The Taos MLS divides this area into two MLS zones:
Taos Canyon (44B)
All properties within this long and narrow zone either from US 64 or are a very short
drive up a short road from where the highway lies on the canyon bottom.
Properties on the north side of the highway are often listed as being on
the "sunny side" to differentiate them from the tendency for shady
portions of the canyon to have very little sun in the winter months.
Snow clings to and piles up along the shady south walls of the canyon
for the entire winter season. Residents of Taos Canyon should
expect to hear some highway traffic noise as most properties are quite
close to the road.

Valle Escondido (50A)
Although the community of Valle Escondido appears to be a just
collection of summer cabins surrounding a golf course, this settlement
features a good number of permanent residents who trade off lower costs
of living and a mountain lifestyle for an eleven-mile commute through
the canyon to Taos. These homes sit about one mile off of the
highway via a forest service road. Most of the cabins and small
homes are about 30-40 years old, but some new homes exist as well.
The nine-hole golf course provides not only golfing, but snowmobiling in
the winter and grazing for elk and deer any time. Some properties
in Valle Escondido are subject to a transfer fee of about $3,000.
