Arroyo Hondo to Lama
Heading North from Taos, State Highway 522 passes through a region
where the Sangre de Cristo Mountains make their closest approach the Rio
Grande Gorge. With the exceptions of relatively flat river bottoms
of streams racing down from the mountains and the Hondo Mesa area, the
topography features almost entirely rolling hills covered with pinon and
ponderosa pines.
The highway passes through or by four distinct communities in this
stretch between Taos and Questa.
An approximately five mile
stretch of NM 522 passes through undeveloped Taos Pueblo land to the south separating these
communities from the Town of Taos and the
regions surrounding it.
These communities have no commercial services so residents must go either north to
Questa or south to
Taos for banks, groceries, gas, etc...

Distance to Taos:
10-20 Minutes
Distance to Taos Ski
Valley: 20-40 minutes |
The Taos MLS divides this area into four MLS zones:
Arroyo Hondo (05A)
The fast-flowing Arroyo Hondo stream on its way from Taos Ski Valley
to the Rio Grande, provides this lush valley community the sounds of
rushing water and irrigation for its verdant fields. Before the
Taos Gorge Bridge was built in 1965, Arroyo Hondo served as the gateway
to the other side of the Rio Grande from Taos. It still provides
the only place north of Taos where you can drive down to the Rio Grande
and cross it on the John Dunn Bridge. It sits in the valley bottom
along this stream on both sides of NM 522. Surrounding rolling
land such as the Sandia Canyon Subdivision and the hilly roads off of
County Road B001 fall in this zone.
Here you will find old adobe homes in the valley bottoms with newer
homes built to take advantage of the views from the pinon studded hills.

Hondo Mesa (24)
Perched on a plateau immediately south of Arroyo Hondo
and west of highway 522, Hondo Mesa has a very different feel than
the communities farther north. The land is much flatter and the
ground cover is sagebrush. This gives the area a "big sky" feel. Taos Pueblo land borders it to the
southeast, the Rio Grande Gorge forms the western boundary, and the rim
overlooking the Arroyo Hondo Valley forms the northern boundary. This relatively new community
typically features modern pueblo style homes. The driving distance to Taos
is just enough to result in slightly lower home prices than communities
closer in.
Lama (26A)
The Lama Foundation gives this community its name and recognition.
Dramatic view across the valley to the Rio Grande Gorge and beyond
provide wonderful sunsets. The area is recovering nicely from a
forest fire that once almost destroyed it. Enough time has elapsed
that the trees are coming back and the village is returning to its
idyllic atmosphere. Lama is the farthest north of the communities
along this stretch of highway 522 between
Taos and Questa and sits just
off the highway to the east.
San Cristobal (40A)
This picturesque village lies along San Cristobal Creek in lush
pasture land surrounded by wooded hills. It features a blend of
old adobe homes and newer more modern ones. Horse lovers often choose this
area due to its abundant grass and ample riding
opportunities. It beauty and plentiful water make this community a
bit pricier than most others in this area. Most of the community
lies just to the east of Highway 522, with several roads leading back
towards the mountains and featuring properties on their wooded slopes.
