Other Listings
The Taos Multiple Listing Service places no restrictions limiting the
geographical scope of properties listed. Three of the areas
classified as "Other" are distant but with defined boundaries as shown
on the map below. If a property does not fall into one of the
other MLS areas, it is classified as
OTHER(54) which has no boundaries.
Most listings here lie on or beyond the fringes usually serviced by real estate brokers using the
Taos MLS. Each of
these areas frequently will also have properties not listed by participating
REALTORS® so properties shown in them should be considered a
sampling rather than a complete and exhaustive list of those available.

Chama (11B)
Chama sits about 90 miles northwest of Taos on US 64/84 near the
Colorado border and the headwaters of the Chama River. This area
rests in the mountainous central area of Rio Arriba County and contains
its county seat of Tierra Amarilla. It serves as the
western terminus of the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad. Views extend
north to the high San Juan Mountains just over the border in Colorado.
The Chama River originates just over the border in southern Colorado and
flows southward to where it joins the Rio Grande near Espanola.
The zone includes the towns of Chama, Tierra Armarilla, El Vado, Los
Ojos, and others in the Chama Valley. As this zone is too distant
to be served by brokerages specializing in the Taos Market, no effort is
made here to further define it.
Ojo Caliente (30B)
Best known for the Ojo Caliente Spa with its hot springs, this zone
includes the extreme southwest portion of Taos County and adjacent
portions of Rio Arriba County. Most people traveling US 285 know
only of the settled area along US 285, but are completely unaware of the
remote and physically and culturally isolated communities including Las
Tablas, Cañon Plaza, Petaca, Vallecitos, and La Madera that are also
included in this area. This zone also includes El Rito (not to be
confused with El Rito/Latir) - home of
Northern New Mexico Community College. When searching this area,
both Santa Fe and Taos MLSs should be searched to find all properties.
Mora County (30A)
The boundaries of this zone coincide with those of Mora County with
the town of Mora being the county seat.
It stretches from the crest of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains east to
their foothills and on the Great Plains. Most of the Taos County MLS
listings tend to be situated in the mountainous northern and western
areas or grassy ranch land in the Ocate area.
Raton (36B)
The northernmost town on Interstate 25 in New Mexico has served as a
gateway to the area since it was a major stop on the Mountain Route of
the Santa Fe Trail, followed by the Sante Fe Railroad. The economy
of this town boomed in the late 1800s and early 1900s, as can be
seen in the Victorian architecture and period homes of the town.
Once the interstate highway came through, most travelers no longer
stopped in the town and its population declined. Home prices are
quite a bit lower than the Taos area due to the large number of older
homes and relatively small population. Community leaders hope that
a new "racino" (combination of a race track and casino) being built to
lure travelers off of the highway and provide jobs and revitalize this
area's economy.
San Miguel County (40B)
The boundaries of this zone coincide with those of San Miguel County
with the county seat of Las Vegas.
This huge county stretches from a short distance east of Sante Fe, east
to almost the Texas line. Almost all of the listings shown in the
Taos County MLS in this zone lie north of Las Vegas along highway 518 or
off of other roads and highways leading off of highway 518.
Other (54A)
Most of these listings will be quite far from Taos with the highest
concentration in neighboring counties of New Mexico and Costilla County
of Colorado. Listings as far from Taos as Jamaica and Belize have appeared in this zone.
